Partnership Working with Police
Community and partnership working is at the heart of everything we do at Safer Business Network - without the dedication from our business members, camera operators, policing teams and security officers, we wouldn’t be able to achieve the amazing results we do.
Since the beginning of March, we have seen some great success from one of our BCRPs in South East London, all thanks to the close relationships built throughout the community by the Safer Lewisham team.
• Throughout February, the BCRP’s work in making sure staff in businesses are able to recognise prolific offenders meant multiple retail businesses identified a male as targeting goods within their premises. On the 1st March, a security officer stopped this individual for attempted theft worth £225.00 and used our radio to request police attendance. Police attended, assessed the incident and arrested the individual. This was the last piece of intel needed to meet grounds to exclude this offender from all of the businesses in the Lewisham community.
• Member businesses located on high streets have a close relationship with CCTV operators, communicating sightings of prolific offenders via the radio; an offender recently issued with a Community Protection Notice (CPN) for anti-social behaviour has been reported breaching this injunction multiple times, with CCTV operators recording footage from these incidents as evidence. On the 2nd of March, a BCRP officer witnessed the individual breaching this CPN in person and called the local policing team, who came to arrest the offender and collect CCTV footage. Multi-agency work to address this offender’s behaviour is ongoing.
• Also on the 2nd March, an officer from the Safer Neighbourhood Team on patrol recognised an offender to whom our BCRP team had recently issued an exclusion notice, and prevented him from stealing goods from a member premises. Police access the BCRP intelligence database on a regular basis to monitor prolific offenders presence in the town centre, taking advantage of the easy access to local intelligence.
• On the 3rd March, a pair of offenders incredibly well-known to businesses and police as shoplifters across the borough of Lewisham were stopped in another member business after a security officer noticed them concealing goods totalling £89.00. Police were called, and recognised one of the pair as a wanted offender, so arrested him for various offences including breach of CPW.
We are extremely proud of the work and commitment our businesses and stakeholders have towards a Safer London; intelligence and expertise from our business members, and effective action from police, is vital in our work to improve the look and feel of London’s communities.
