Partnership Working to Tackle Pickpocketing in Stores

Pickpocketing within retail stores has been a growing concern in the WestEnd since the lockdowns eased. Our BCRP Officers have been working hard to compile evidence from DISC reports and Police crime statistics in order to identify key offenders and hotspots.

Recently, we worked closely with our BID partners to provide the Police with a comprehensive overview of a prolific group of offenders and analysis of the locations, timings and trends.

The offender information we provided was taken from DISC reports and Street Team interactions including images, names, dates of birth and addresses. This level of detail will assist the police in targeting the key groups of offenders.

We’re pleased to say that the ORB Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team took these evidence packs and, along with their own crime stats, used them to plan a series of plain clothes operations targeting prolific pickpockets in the area.

Last week, Safer WestEnd and other partners attended a briefing held by the Officer in charge of the first plain clothes operation. Police Officers were on street and in businesses watching for suspicious activity and assisting store security where needed. The first operations took place on 30 June and 1 July with multiple arrests made and on the ground support provided to store security teams.

More operations are planned for the future and we will be supporting Policing teams with intelligence shared by the business community.
