Fantastic teamwork leads to success in Lewisham
Lewisham’s business community raised concerns around the anti-social behaviour of school-aged young people with Safer Lewisham BCRP since schools opened again in September 2020, and thanks to our strong multi-agency partnerships we were able to take a strategic approach to addressing the issues. Teamwork with Youth First, a local community benefit society, has initiated engagement with young people in Lewisham to identify persistent troublemakers and provide support to vulnerable individuals. Through the intelligence collected, police were able to conduct a successful stop-and-search to remove a knife from the high street, and further partnership work with both Lewisham Shopping Centre and the MPS to deter anti-social behaviour is forthcoming once businesses reopen. Our wider focus on early intervention is proving more effective in deterring youth offending than following a strict enforcement route, and businesses are now reporting feeling more confident and less vulnerable to anti-social behaviour. A great result all round!
