Be Kind, #ShopKind
Safer Business Network are supporting and promoting the Home Office-backed #ShopKind campaign, which aims to highlight the scale and impact of violence and abuse against shop workers while encouraging positive behaviour and kindness from customers in shops.
83% of retail staff report that they have experienced verbal abuse within the past year, while 12% reported being physically assaulted – these are worrying statistics, but even more concerning is that many shop workers feel like abuse and aggression from customers is ‘just part of the job’.
As part of our work to support the campaign, members of our team joined the Met Police Business Crime Hub to host an Engagement Day on the 31st July with our member businesses in Lewisham Town Centre, visiting staff members and security officers in stores to promote the campaign and encourage shop workers to report all incidents of violence and abuse from customers to the police. We distributed resources from the Met Police, including guides to conflict management and #ShopKind posters for stores to display to remind customers that abuse towards their staff members is never acceptable.
Preparations are already in place to continue our fantastic partnership work with the Business Crime Hub to support businesses across all of our London boroughs by engaging with staff and members of the public to raise the profile of violence in business crime and support staff in feeling safe at work.
